The Origins – 1911
Clube União Micaelense was founded on 7 May 1911 by Rolando de Viveiros and other Micaelense entrepreneurs. Its roots trace back to the associative movement on the island of São Miguel: the club emerged from the environment fostered by the Sociedade Promotora da Agricultura Micaelense, the Sociedade Promotora de Instrução e Recreio, and the Sociedade dos Amigos das Letras e Artes, the latter founded in 1848 by writer António Feliciano de Castilho. The União Micaelense association wasn’t founded as a sports club from the outset — football was still taking its first steps on a plot of land next to the São Gonçalo Agricultural Market.
Rolando de Viveiros, the club’s first General Assembly president, was a prominent figure in Ponta Delgada: a merchant involved in international shipping, honorary consul for the Nordic countries, chairman of the General Council of the Autonomous District of Ponta Delgada, and also a noted playwright and poet — one of his plays was even chosen to inaugurate the Teatro Micaelense in 1951.
The Golden Era – the 1961/62 Taça de Portugal
The club’s proudest moment came in the 1961/62 season, when União Micaelense became the representative of the Azores and Madeira in the Taça de Portugal (Portuguese Cup). After winning a qualifying tournament against Angústias Atlético Clube (Horta), Sport Clube Lusitânia, and Clube Sport Marítimo (Madeira), the club reached the quarter-finals of the Taça de Portugal, where it was eliminated by Vitória de Guimarães. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, the club also went on to win numerous district titles.
Pauleta — Our Most Illustrious Name
The most famous player to come through the club was Pauleta, former Paris Saint-Germain star and captain of the Portuguese national team, with 88 caps and 47 goals. Pauleta’s connection to União Micaelense came in two distinct periods: as a child, around 1985/86, in the club’s youth ranks; and later, as a senior player, in the 1994/95 season, before moving on to Estoril and beginning the journey that would take him to Spain, France, and the national team.
Youth Development: From Football School to Club
The club’s youngest development groups — Unis, Petizes, and Traquinas — sit within the Escola de Futebol Prof. Augusto Moura Jr.. The remaining age groups — Benjamins, Infantis, Iniciados, Juvenis, and Juniores — made up of teams competing in AFPD competitions, complete the club’s youth development structure. Clube União Micaelense holds 4-star Certified Training Entity status, maintained continuously between the 2015/2016 and 2025/2026 seasons: the first Azorean club to achieve this distinction, and one of only two amateur clubs nationwide with this recognition.
The International Tournament
The International Football Tournament Azores U11 held its first edition in 2006, played at the former Clube União Micaelense Sports Complex, in Grotinha, with just four teams taking part. Since then, the tournament has grown year after year — the 2025 edition brought together 32 teams from ten different countries and regions. In 2026, the tournament reached its 18th edition, marking two decades since it began (the edition count has fallen slightly behind the calendar years due to forced interruptions from the pandemic in 2020 and 2021). The tournament is today one of the most prestigious youth football events in the Azores, and in 2027 it reaches its 19th edition.
Honorary Member of the Order of Merit
On 10 June 2011 — Portugal Day, marking Camões and the Portuguese Communities — His Excellency the President of the Republic, Professor Aníbal Cavaco Silva, honoured Clube União Micaelense with the title of Honorary Member of the Order of Merit.
This prestigious honour from the Presidency of the Republic was awarded as part of the club’s Centenary celebrations, recognising its significant contribution to sport, youth development, and its service to the community across 100 years of history.
Gold Medal of the Municipality of Ponta Delgada
On 13 May 2011, Clube União Micaelense was awarded the Gold Medal of the Municipality of Ponta Delgada, one of the highest honours the local council can bestow.
The medal was presented by the then-Mayor of Ponta Delgada, Dr. Berta Cabral, to the Club’s President, Dr. Manuel Arruda, during the Centenary dinner held at the Solar da Graça.
On the occasion, Berta Cabral remarked that towns and cities “are places with a soul”, and that “the spirit of our 24 parishes has a face that deserves to be recognised and celebrated: the face of our sports clubs.” Of Clube União Micaelense, she said it was “a face that all of us should proudly share and champion.”
She also noted that celebrating the club’s 100th anniversary meant celebrating “far more than a hundred victories — countless moments of joy, memorable people, unforgettable occasions, and lasting connections,” congratulating the club’s leaders, members, and everyone who, since 1911, had helped make União Micaelense a true benchmark of Azorean sport.
A recognition that honours our history and reinforces the legacy of a club whose story is deeply intertwined with the history of sporting competition on the island of São Miguel itself — always marked by a genuine love for the shirt.
first Certified Training Entity in the Azores
In May 2015, Clube União Micaelense wrote one of the most significant chapters in its history by becoming the first Certified Training Entity in the Azores, a distinction awarded by the Portuguese Football Federation.
This landmark achievement placed the club among the national benchmarks for youth development, making it, at the time, one of only two amateur clubs in Portugal to earn this certification — at a time when the evaluation criteria were particularly demanding.
The recognition was the result of years of work by leaders, coaches, staff, athletes, and families, reflecting the club’s commitment to excellence in youth development, grounded in quality, education, values, and the all-round development of young people.
The distinction was formally presented at a ceremony held at the Cidade do Futebol, in Lisbon, where General Director Arsénio Sampaio Furtado received the Certified Training Entity plaque from the then-President of the Portuguese Football Federation, Fernando Gomes, marking national recognition for the work carried out by Clube União Micaelense.
The club’s pioneering spirit and vision were widely recognised, with the achievement leading to Votes of Commendation, unanimously approved, from the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores, the Municipal Assembly of Ponta Delgada, and the Parish Assembly of São Sebastião.
Since then, Clube União Micaelense has consecutively renewed its status as a 4-Star Certified Training Entity, demonstrating the continuity of an outstanding development programme and cementing its position as one of the leading benchmarks for youth football development in the Azores and in Portugal.
The Club Today
In May 2026, the club marked 115 years of history, a milestone recognised by the Municipality of Ponta Delgada itself, which unanimously approved a vote of congratulations to União Micaelense. Today, the club remains active in football, handball, and beach tennis, continuing to build its history in service of the Micaelense community — in Ponta Delgada and beyond.
